Super person of the week: Seth Fisher

I only discovered Seth Fisher's work last month and was quite shocked and sad to learn he passed away four years ago. His work is great and some of most unique i have seen.

He illustrated 'Vertigo Pop: Tokyo' (which got him a Eisner award nomination in 2003), worked on a variety of DC and Marvel titles, (most notably 'Flash: Time Flies'), designed his own video games, did lots of conceptual design work, and drew for a wide variety of outlets.

His website is still being updated reguarly by his family and hosts a lot of his artwork, games, and even a shop.

Super person of the week: Alex Ross

Alex Ross was probably the first artist to "paint" a comic (certainly the first one in the mainstream circle) and today is considered one of the world’s most preeminent and well-respected comic book artists around. His first big project in the comic industry was "Marvels", the book through which I discovered this work and was totally blown away by its hyper-realistic quality and how well it worked on the comic book format.

Over 15 years after the "Marvels" debut, his work has been on dozens of book covers and pages on several publishers including DC, Marvel, Warner, Dynamite and Wizard.

Super person of the week: Paul Grist

I just only discovered Paul Grist a couple of months back and am now a big fan. He has had published work since the 80s, both in mainstream and small press publishers, but what is the most well known for are his tittles - the unorthodox superhero series Jack Staff and hard-boiled police series Kane, both of which he is the writer as well as the penciler and inker.

Super person of the week: Jacob Borshard

Jacob Borshard is an illustrator, musician, and general awesomeness-maker based in Austin. I can't really express how much of a genius I think this man  is, but don't take my word for it, check out his comics, t-shirts designs, prints and music, and see for yourself.

Fact magazine had a very nice feature on him a couple of months back.  It's more focused more on his music rather than illustration work, but a very nice read anyway. Check it out here.

Super person of the week: Paul Duffield

I got to know Paul Duffield's work through Warren Ellis' ongoing weekly comic FreakAngels, and it totally blew me away since the very first chapter. FreakAngels book 3 has just been published, and the online updates keep coming every Friday.

Apart from FreakAngels, his published works include a wordless 18 page manga-influenced comic strip called Sojourn, and an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest (view preview here).

Super person of the week: Dean Trippe

Dean Trippe is a freelance comics creator based in Tennessee. I love the simplicity and ingenuity of his work.

He is also the founder and editor of Project: Rooftop , the creator of the superhero parody webcomic Butterfly, the writer of the weekly political cartoon President awesome, and a member of the all-ages comics collective Lunchbox Funnies. Awesomeness!

Super person of the week: Ryan Ottley

Ryan Ottley is best known for his work on Invincible, the first and most popular superhero tittle on Image Comics. Invincible was created and originally drawn by Cory Walker, but Ottley assumed the art duties on issue 8 and has been pencilling ever since.

He is also the artist and co-creator of  Ted Noodleman: Bicycle Delivery Boy, which started as a webcomic and got published in 2005 (and through which Robert Kirkman discovered his work and got him on board Image Comics drawing Invicible), OZF5: Gale Force, and the much more recent Death Grub, a one off story also on Image.

His website is updated regularly with lots of drawings and sketches, both of stuff he's working on at the time as well as lots of random bits and pieces he draws just for fun.

Super person of the week: Jim Woodring

I don't even know where to start on Jim Woodring. His work is one of a kind. Surreal and dreamlike, often wordless and visually astonishing, it portraits weird worlds, anthropomorphic and odd shaped characters in whimsically strange situtations.

With his first publications dating back from the early eighties, there's tons available these days, from the excellent large collection of books on fantagraphics, some japanese publications and limited runs on presspop to prints, original paintings and vinyl toys.

Super person of the week: Chris Giarrusso

Chris G is the creator of G-Man, a fun new superhero comic on Image, and Mini Marvels, featuring the good old Marvel heroes as kids, which has appeared as back up features in many of their comics and has recently been compiled into two books of their own.

Have a look at his website for loads of strips, drawings and sketches. Superheroes have never looked this cute!

Super person of the week: Sam Flores

Heavily influenced by his graffiti background, Sam Flores' current fine art work is instantly indentifiable. Working with canvas, walls, furniture, vinyl toys, clothing lines and skateboard desings, he has estabilished his place in the modern art movement in San Francisco along the likes of Jeremy Fish, Mike Giant and Shepard Fairey. Something in the water, they say...

Super person of the week: James Kochalka

James Kochalka is one of my top heroes. His daily comic strip "The American Elf" has been going on for 10 years now, portraying every day life in a way that only he can do.

In just 3 or 4 pannels a day, he manages to document different aspects of his life in a clever, funny and most endearing way.

He has published numerous books, including including three collections of the American Elf strips, the also full of autobiographical references Magic boy and the Robot Elf, and one of my all time favourites Monkey vs Robot.

Super person of the week: Humberto Ramos

I discovered Humberto Ramos a couple of years ago and have been following his work ever since. He has done a lot of work for marvel in the past years and I particularly love the way he draws spider-man (probably my favourite rendering ever). Gotta love new-school!

Super Person of the week: Jason

With most of his work now translated and published on Fantagraphics, Jason has become one of the most popular European artists over the past years. Usually with no dialogues, anthropomorphic characters and using a very minimal drawing style, his novels definitly deserve all the attention they've been getting.

Some of my personal favourites are Sshhhh!, The Living and hte dead and Why are you doing this?

Check more of his work at www.fantagraphics.com.
